Iontophoresis for unusual body parts
Treatment with special electrodes
Iontophoresis is mainly used to treat sweating in hands, feet and armpits. All other areas are more unusual.
The thinner and more sensitive the skin and the larger the treatment area, the more difficult it becomes to achieve success.
We don't want to discourage you from trying, but we want to prepare you for the fact that a success rate is only to be expected in ~50% of cases.
Ultimately, this means that the desire to reduce the sweat in these areas can only be fulfilled for every other person.
Nevertheless, we are of the opinion that everyone should try iontophoresis at least once.
Our money-back guarantee and 8-week trial period apply to these special cases as well.
Positioning and choosing iontophoresis electrodes correctly
For the hands, feet, and armpits, the positioning of the electrodes is self-explanatory. However, in this case, we are dealing with very specific areas.
These areas are:
- Sweating on the abdomen
- Sweating on the back
- Sweating on the buttocks
- Sweating on the neck
- Sweating on smaller areas of the face
- Sweating on the head and face
- Sweating on the forehead
For these areas, depending on the treatment surface and treatment region, we offer the following electrode options:
Silicone electrodes - they can easily be size-adjusted with a pair of scissors.
Size S: Small electrodes made from flexible silicone, 6 x 10 cm, or small metal electrodes in thick sponge pockets
Size M: Special neck electrode, 15 x 15 cm, or special belly/back electrode, 21 x 21 cm
Size L: Special facial electrode or large flat aluminium electrodes, 20 x 30 cm; as well as stainless steel electrodes, 15 x 30 cm; or flexible silicone electrodes, 19 x 13 cm
Positioning aids should always be made of non-conductive natural materials.
Electrodes can be held in position by: headbands, wrist warmers, hoods, towels, kidney warmers, bandages, kidney protectors, ladies' tops, Velcro straps, elastic Velcro straps, T-shirts, muscle shirts. The imagination knows no limits.
Sweating on the belly
Special electrodes for the belly can be combined with a tight t-shirt or a kidney protector to maintain a good contact pressure and an evenly distributed support.
A more convenient alternative is to place two large electrodes at a distance of 3 cm between the sponge covers and keep them in place with a kidney protector. It is also possible to wear two small electrodes (for example armpit electrodes) under a pair of high-waisted underpants. They should be positioned at sufficient distance. The sponges are placed on the edge of the sweating areas.
Sweating on the back:
If your whole back sweats, position the large special electrodes on your upper and lower back, keeping them in place with a form-fitting t-shirt or the sewn-on Velcro straps. Alternatively, use two large electrodes. You can sew them in for a quick and secure positioning.
If your back only sweats partially, position the electrodes to the left and the right of the sweating areas (see: sweating on the belly).
Sweating on the buttocks
Place two flat electrode plates, each covered with a wet towel, on a flat surface. Maintain a good distance between them and seat yourself on top (avoiding your crown jewels).
Sweating in the neck area
Position two small electrodes/underarm electrodes sensibly.
Sweating on smaller areas of the face
Moisten the face mask in all affected areas. Attention: since you are dealing with such a small area, ask your doctor beforehand or conduct the treatment under medical supervision. Note: Do not exceed 0.1 mA per square centimeter or your skin may be at risk.
Sweating on the face & head:
Sweating on the forehead
Place small underarm electrodes under a headband (tennis band). The headband will provide the proper pressure needed to maintain skin contact.
Alternatives for positioning the electrodes: select appropriately depending on the size of the treatment area.
- electrodes placed freely beneath a form-fitting t-shirt or sewn into the fabric of the shirt. Low-cost and convenient tip: use small or large flexible electrodes, depending on the size of the treatment area.
- fasten the electrodes with Velcro straps (sewn onto the large and small special applicators for back and neck)
- fasten the electrodes under a kidney protector/headband/tight top or sew them into the fabric
The success of iontophoresis in special areas depends on the positioning of the special electrodes.
Example: treating the lower back.
In the waist area, the body is tapered, whereas it is curved around the hips and the buttocks. This complicates the positioning and fastening of the electrodes.
It is possible to sew the electrodes onto a kidney protector in order to ensure a comfortable and efficient therapy. Fastening them onto a tight shirt or under shirt is also a possibility.
The right distance between the electrodes
When using special electrodes, you should always keep a certain distance between them. Whenever two electrodes are in direct contact, a large proportion of the current flows from one sponge/tissue cover into the other one. For this reason, always maintain a distance between the two electrodes.
There are two ways to treat the sweating body parts. The distance between the electrodes can be kept narrow or wide.
In principle, you can select the distance freely. When treating larger areas, a wider distance is more convenient (for example: one special electrode for the face, another one for hands or feet, in order to close the circuit).
For smaller areas and "hotspots" that are affected by extreme sweat, a closer distance may be the right option.
In this case, the electrodes are applied to the edge of the treatment area. In this way, the skin between them is affected by the treatment, because it is exposed to the current flow.
You should always pay attention to the current flow. If skin irritation occurs, it usually does so in the area affected by the current.
However, you should never position the electrodes in such a way that the current is conducted directly through the brain. For example, never place an electrode on one temple and the other electrode on the other temple!
If you are unsure how to apply the electrodes, your doctor will be happy to help you. You can carry out your first treatments under medical supervision until you are sure how and where you can apply your iontophoresis electrodes.
